Margi & Deshi Sangeet

Let us continue with the prior blog's topic, which was sangeet. So in that blog, we discussed the basics of Sangeet. If you have not read that blog please go to the link which I m providing below and read that blog.
And if you have already read that we can continue.
So, we have discussed earlier that sangeet present in ancient times were of two types:

  • Margi Sangeet
  • Deshi Sangeet

Margi Sangeet:

The word "Marg" has got its emergence from the word "Margi" which means "road". Margi sangeet got emerged by Deva Brahma. After its emergence, Acharya Bharatmuni performed it in front of Lord Shiva. In Sangeet Parijat it has also stated that sangeet is of two types, which is Margi and Deshi sangeet. The form of music or sangeet which Deva Brahma taught Acharya Bharatmuni was only Margi Sangeet. According to Sangeet Darpan, The form of music which got emerged by Deva Brahma, which was performed by Acharya Bharatmuni in front of Lord Shiva and the music which is "Mukhti-Dayak" is MARGI sangeet. There is a direct connection of Devta & Devtaloka to Margi sangeet. If we go into the theory of different Granthas it is stated there as:

  • The form of sangeet which is most ancient,
  • whose rules can't be changed or destroyed,
  • which is bonded under difficult rules and regulations is MARGI SANGEET.
According to Acharya Bharatmuni, Margi sangeet has a direct connection to God. This is the only means by which God can be achieved(statement of Bharatmuni). It is recalled by two names, one was "Marghi" and the other is "Marg".

Deshi Sangeet:

The word "Deshi" has got its emergence from the word "Dish" which means "Some Place". So the Deshi sangeet was actually related to the common people. It was the music which was of the people, by the people and for the people. It was not having tough rules or regulations. |It was people-friendly music. According to different Granthas it is stated there as:
  • The form of Sangeet which is made up of "Dish" dhatu,
  • which got emergence because of the common people,
  • and which lacks in Aalap is DESHI SANGEET.
It was known as Deshi sangeet in the ancient times, but if we see in modern times we can call it as Folk music. As Folk music is not bonded to any tough rules and regulations as Classical music is. Folk music is just for the sake of common people and entertainment which relates it to the main Deshi music.
So, in conclusion, we came to the following points:

  • Margi sangeet came from the "Marg" and Deshi sangeet came from the word "Dish".
  • Margi sangeet is related to God and Deshi sangeet is related to the common people.
  • Margi sangeet got emerged by the Deva Brahma himself and the Deshi sangeet got emerged by the common people.
  • Margi sangeet was full of tough rules and regulations while Deshi sangeet was only for common people so was not bonded under any such rules and regulations.
  • The main motive to perform Margi sangeet was just to impress God and on the other hand, the main motive to perform Deshi sangeet was just to entertain the common people.
So it was all about Margi and Deshi sangeet in this blog. In the next blog, we will discuss some other aspects of SANGEET. Till then stay tuned and stay musical.

Basics of Indian Music

An Overview:-

Indian Music is a vast subject and surprisingly it is one of the most discussed subjects of the world.
It has kept both the theoretical as well as practical significance. If we go back to its roots, Indian Music was somehow spiritually bonded in nature. All the compositions were only to impress God. But with the passage of time, it somehow changed. Now the Indian Music has remained there just to impress the Audience and to show one's talents and capability.

The First Walk

The first and the foremost word which we have to learn in Indian Music is "SANGEET". This is the first step towards the learning process of Indian Music. After this, Indian Music gets elaborated by its techniques, performance scenario, Stage setup and many more things which we will discuss in the coming blogs. So lets us start with the word "SANGEET"

SANGEET

The word SANGEET has been derived by adding two words, which are "GEET+ SAM". Here we can see two words which are GEET & SAM. The word SAM means to get something in the right way and the word GEET means the song. So the collective meaning of these two words is,'" The song which is sung rightly".
By the word SANGEET, we mean Singing, Instrumentation and Dancing. Sangeet is not assigned to just singing or instrumental music or dancing. It is collective of these three art forms. Sangeet cannot get formed by a collection of one of or two of these art forms but all the three art forms have to be collected there. The Sanskrit SHLOKA given below means the same.
                                                     गीतं वाद्यं तथा नृत्यं त्रयं संगतमुच्यते
This Shloka has been given by Pt. Sharangdeva in his Grantha namely SANGEET RATNAKAR.
Acharya Brahaspati has also stated the same theory in the context of the SANGEET. He has stated that these three art forms are connected to each other. No one can single-handedly be performed.
Origin and Development
There are a lot of definitions if we search for the origin of the Sangeet. But the most relevant theory is the Theory of the OM. The word OM has been derived by the collectiveness of the three words which are '' which means Ankara-Brahma, '' which means Ukara-Vishnu, '' which means  Makara-Mahesh. According to Swami Dayanand Saraswati," This OMKAR is the foremost name of the GOD.

Bheda of Sangeet

There are two Bheda of Sangeet which is as follows:
  • MARGI SANGEET
  • DESHI SANGEET
Margi & Deshi sangeet can be found in each and every Grantha of Indian Music.
If we go for a brief introduction to the two bhedas of sangeet. The Margi sangeet is linked with the Devtas and the Deshi sangeet is linked with the General Public. We will discuss it deeply in our next blog so that we can deeply get known to these two Bhedas of sangeet in Indian Music. Till then stay tuned and stay musical.
